Next: Sustainability

Sustainability

Since Kruger Inc. was founded over a century ago in Montreal, we have responded to change by introducing innovative technologies, meeting evolving consumer demands, empowering our employees, protecting natural resources and, more recently, embracing sustainability in all facets of our business. As a result, Kruger is one of Canada's oldest and most successful natural resource firms.

Today the trend continues. In 2010 we formalized our path forward by introducing Sustainability 2015, a voluntary initiative that recognizes we need to do even more to reduce our environmental footprint. Sustainable development demands a systematic approach to environmental protection, one that incorporates all aspects of our business. Sustainability 2015 embraces this approach to help meet the demands for products that are produced with respect for the environment. We believe that sustainability is a journey or continuous improvement—not a destination. As a result, Sustainability 2015 will challenge us to change continuously by improving our products, as well as the operations that manufacture and deliver them.

Nine specific, actionable and attainable targets are at the core of Kruger Products' Sustainability 2015 initiative, based on a 2009 reference year. Collectively, these targets demonstrably extend our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint and to make our products and operations more sustainable.

For our products, these targets include:

  • Using only 100% third-party-certified fibre,
  • Receiving Chain of Custody Certification, assuring the fibre we use can be tracked back to approved sources,
  • Reducing our packaging material by 5%,
  • Adding to our 90+ third-party certified products.

For our operations, the targets include:

  • Reducing our energy consumption by 15%,
  • Reducing our greenhouse gas emissions by 15%,
  • Reducing our emissions from transportation by 15%,
  • Reducing our water consumption by 15%, and
  • Reducing solid waste sent to landfill by 20%.

We're already seeing results!

  • In 2010 we reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 13% overall. Our award-winning biogasification system in our New Westminster, BC mill reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 34% in its first year of operation.
  • We reduced energy consumption by 2.6% in 2010. A heat recovery system installed in our Gatineau, QC mill in October 2010 reduced energy consumption at that facility by 11% and greenhouse gas emissions by over 14% at that facility.
  • Kruger Products is the first Canadian tissue manufacturer to earn the Forest Stewardship Council®'s Chain of Custody certification in March 2011. Beginning summer 2011, Kruger Products has the largest portfolio of FSC-certified tissue products in North America with more than 150 items.

"Sustainability 2015 is not a standalone initiative. It marks an exciting shift in our philosophical approach—allowing us to do more to help protect the planet," said Mario Gosselin, Chief Operating Officer, Kruger Products. "Today's investment in sustainable business practices will help ensure that our children and yours inherit a healthy planet that will nurture their children too."
